The inaugural Iron Monkey International Distance Triathlon at Metro Zoo played host to an extremely competitive age group field.  Twenty-two men went sub-2:15 over the .6 mile swim, 22 mile bike, 6.5 mile course, while 19 women broke the 2:30 mark.

Here’s a look at how each age and specialty division shaped up!  

MALE OVERALL

Ft. Lauderdale’s Anton Van Zyl showed once again why he is one of Florida’s best, taking the overall win by 3 minutes in an impressive 1:51:26.  His 39:33 6.5 mile run put the race away.  25-year old Ramiro Osorio, ( Miami), was 2nd in 1:54:26, while perennial USAT All-American Clay Wilson, ( Coral Gables), took 3rd in 1:57:04 – at the age of 45!  

FEMALE OVERALL

Jenny Garcia, ( Plantation), was dominant on the women’s side, winning by almost 9 minutes in a time of 2:07:56.  The 2nd & 3rd place finishers, Kerry Allen of Miami, and Jessica Box of Pensacola, had impressive days as well.  Both ladies went sub-2:20, finishing in 2:16:55 and 2:18:26, respectively.

MALE MASTERS OVERALL

Robert Vechiola, ( Boca Raton), won the Master’s Title by finishing 5th overall with a spectacular time of 2:01:10.  The always tough Richard Noritake, ( Miami), was just :30 seconds behind, taking 2nd in 2:01:40.  Plantation’s Jeffrey Marks took the final podium spot, finishing 3rd in 2:08:36.  

FEMALE MASTERS OVERALL

Ft. Lauderdale’s Mandy Miller continued her great year, earning another win in 2:21:13.  Sara Somberg, (Coconut Grove), was 2nd in 2:24:29, while 42-year old Kim Kerdyk finished in 2:26:19 taking the bronze.

FEMALE DUATHLON – 1 MILE RUN/22 MILE BIKE/6.5 MILE RUN

Nina Wagner, ( Miami), cruised to the win, putting almost 3 minutes between her and the rest of the ladies field.  Her time of 2:07:37 included a final 6.5 mile time of 54:19.  Aida Montes de Oca, ( Miami Beach), was 2nd in 2:10:35, while Karen Sanchez, ( Cocoa Beach), was 3rd in 2:25:17.  

MALE DUATHLON – 1 MILE RUN/22 MILE BIKE/6.5 MILE RUN

42-year old Andrew Colabella, (Dania), was 1st in all three race legs, allowing him to take the win in 1:50:36.  Orlando’s Jascha Fields was 2nd in 1:51:59.  Stephen Hunter, ( Miami), took the bronze with a time of 2:01-flat.

MALE AQUABIKE

It was a trio of Miamians going 1-2-3 at the Iron Monkey Aquabike!  Luis Rodriguez took the win in 1:24:50, Andre Quirino was 2nd in 1:29:14, and Angel Alvarez earned the final podium spot, finishing in 1:50:19.  

FEMALE AQUABIKE

Coach Erinne Zohlman, ( Miami), of Body Zen Coaching & Personal Training took the victory by just :38 seconds over Maria Segura of Palm Beach Gardens, 1:30:12 – 1:30:50.  Congrats to Coach Erinne on a great race!  

CLYDESDALE 185-199, 40+

Just continuing to get better and better, Marty Fuchs, ( Coral Springs), owner of Series Title Sponsor About Family Fitness, took yet another Clyde win this season, beating the rest of the division by 29 minutes with his great time of 2:21:15.  COGRATS MARTY!  Wayne Hargreave, ( Coral Gables), was 2nd in 2:50:15, and Ronald Conkling, ( Coral Springs), took 3rd in 3:07:13.

CLYDESDALE 200+, 39 & UNDER

Thomas Mooney, ( Miami Beach), was dominant, taking the Clyde win by more than 15 minutes in the time of 2:31:13.  Hollywood’s Daniel Duval was 2nd in 2:46:31, and David Gonzalez, ( Hallandale), earned the bronze with a time of 2:52:36.  

CLYDESDALE 200+, 40+

Peter Walton, ( Hallandale Beach), put the race away on the run, gaining a 4 minute cushion that allowed him to take the win by just under 3 minutes in a time of 2:25:00.  Lauderhill’s Matt Vangalis was 2nd in 2:27:43, and good buddy Robert Ramirez of Miami continued his great year, finishing 3rd in 2:30:57.

ATHENA

The “most experienced” Athena, coming in all the way from Rockledge, really put it to the Athena field.  Christine Zieres winning time of 2:43:55 was almost 50 minutes better than the rest of the competition!  Miami’s Lisette Manzanares was 2nd in 3:33:25, while Barbara Junge, ( Miami Beach), was 3rd in 3:46:37.  

MALE 15-19

18-year old Juan Pava had an outstanding race, taking the divisional win in 2:11:22, a time that was good enough for 19th overall.  Great job, Juan!

FEMALE 20-24

Jennifer Bodine, ( Garret Park), had a very impressive day, taking the win in 2:18:37, a time good enough for 32nd overall!  Key Biscayne’s Alejandra Cordovez was 2nd in 2:20:54 and Nicole Genta, ( Coral Gables), went home with the bronze thanks to her time of 2:26:31.  

MALE 20-24

22-year old Trevor Coolidge, ( White City), dominated the field, cruising to the win in 2:05:23.  He was 8th overall!  Juan Zarate, ( Miami Beach), was 2nd in 2:15:46 and Naples’ Everett Leonard took 3rd in 2:21:34.

FEMALE 25-29

Gretchen Bielmyer, (Key Biscayne), had an impressive day, taking the win in 2:22:46.  Miami’s Carolina Mantilla was 2nd in 2:29:10, and 3rd place finisher Janna Pasztor, ( Coral Gables), just missed breaking 2:31.  She finished in 2:31:01!  

MALE 25-29

Miami’s Tomasso Maestroni was 14th overall on his way to the win in the 25-29’s in the time of 2:09:12.  David Bryan, ( Hollywood), was 2nd in 2:11:05, and Brad Voelker, ( Nashville, TN), took the bronze in 2:11:48.

FEMALE 30-34

Good friend Angie Matsoff, ( Ft. Lauderdale), was a divisional winner once again, earning the victory with a time of 2:29:06.  Lake Worth’s Andrea Flynn was 2nd in 2:31:53, and Miami’s Carol Villar took the final podium spot thanks to her finish in 3:13:54.  

MALE 30-34

Top Florida age grouper Rodolfo Gonzalez, ( Plantation), was at it once again, taking yet another divisional win in South Florida.  His time of 2:03:02 bested the field by almost 5 minutes and was good for 7th overall!  Adam Kilmer, ( Miami), was 2nd in 2:07:48.  The Zohlman’s of Body Zen fame continued a great family day with Coach Lee Zohlman, ( Miami), taking a 3rd in 2:10:58.  Nice work!

FEMALE 35-39

The always tough Jennifer Magnussen, (Weston), was your winner here, clocking a 2:18:59 on the way to the win.  Denise Desauliers, ( Miami Beach), was 2nd in 2:20:32, and Hollywood’s Lisa Lamey took the silver with a time of 2:26:02.  

MALE 35-39

Robert Saputo of Marco Island won the division in convincing fashion, as his 2:00:34 was 7:14 better than the rest of the field!   Miami’s Alex Cosio was 2nd in 2:07:48, and Larry Shagrin of Boca Raton was 3rd in 2:08:11.

FEMALE 40-44

It’s another 1st place finish for the Fuchs’!  This time, About Family Fitness matriarch Lauren Fuchs, ( Coral Springs), providing the impressive performance, going sub-2:30 to take the win in 2:26:50.  Clermont’s Leah Dearman was 2nd in 2:34:58, and Miami’s Amy Mangialetto took 3rd in 2:40:13.  Congrats to all three of our “medal” winners on great races!  

MALE 40-44

Brian Kernan of Parkland used an impressive run, - 54:43 for the 6.5 miler, 2nd best in the division – to hold off the rest of the field and take the win .  Ex-Western Carolina baseball star Tim Milian, ( Pembroke Pines), also had a great race, taking 2nd in 2:18:40.  David Baker, ( Deerfield Beach), took 3rd in 2:19:44.

FEMALE 45-49

Miami’s Maria Andrews cruised to an easy win in 2:29:37, - 16 minutes better than the rest of the field!  Patty Wells, (Coconut Creek), was 2nd in 2:55:37, and Julie Maas, who came all the way in from Decatur, Georgia rounded out the top three.  She finished in 3:42:40.  

MALE 45-49

Wellington’s John Jorgensen blazed to a winning time of 2:17:52, - good for 30th overall! –putting more than 17 minutes between him and the rest of the 45-49’s.  Chris Roberts, ( Miami) was 2nd in 2:35:23 and Plantation’s Nick Sortal took 3rd with a time of 2:42:20.

FEMALE 50-54

Courtney Siebrecht, (Tequesta), was the runaway winner here, clocking an outstanding time of 2:45:42.  Jill Poffenbarger of Coral Springs was 2nd in 3:07:23.  

MALE 50-54

George Manekas, ( Hallandale), continued his outstanding season, taking another win in a very competitive age group.  His time of 2:19:45 was just about 10 minutes better than the rest of the field!  Coconut Creek’s Leighton Bewley was 2nd in 2:29:35, and Andrew Apollony, ( Pembroke Pines), was 3rd in 2:41:43.

MALE 55-59

David Fields of Tequesta had a gold medal performance, taking the win in 2:30:53.  Miami Metrozoo’s Tom Trump was the runner-up in a time of 2:40:05.  Without Tom, this event wouldn’t happen, so KUDOS TO TOM!  

FEMALE 60-64

Mary Ann Wallace, ( Naples), took the win in 3:17:46

MALE 60-64

Boca Raton’s Victor Shames had a great day, going 3:06:29 to take the victory in the men’s 60-64’s.
